Now What? After Grad School.

You finally finished grad school. You most likely have been a student 18+ years in your life (I was a student for 26 years). Now what do you do with your life?

This can be a hard transition. It will probably be the first time you are solely an employee in an institution. It might be challenging to think of yourself that way and also to think that others think of you that way. How do you make this transition easier? I will share a few points that helped me when I transitioned from academia to the tech industry. This list assumes a change in your work industry, but it can be useful even if it is only a job change,

  • Give yourself time for adjustment: Don’t expect to blend in immediately. It could take months, if not more.
  • View the transition as a learning opportunity rather than as a cause for stress: It is a way to expand your knowledge and skills.
  • Embrace your strengths: There is a reason why you got hired in a new industry/job: They saw a potential in you. Embrace your strengths.
    • When I started at tech, I had little understanding of corporate dynamics and style. However, I had a strong data analysis background due to my dissertation process. That is how I made a name for myself.

Last but not least, do not expect a linear in transition. There will be better days, and there will be worse days. But when you look back a couple of months before from where you are, you will see the progress you have made.

Onto the new adventure!
